How can we use AI to better and faster characterize transport of particles and microorganisms in porous material?

Micro and nano size particles exist in diverse porous materials in nature (like microorganisms and clays in soils), medicine (like for drug delivery or tracing transport paths in body), and in industry (like in filters, catalysts, probes).

In this challenged we explore and test new and novel AI methods for the simultaneous detection and segmentation of particles transport in porous materials. For example, we apply

Mask R-CNN, which performs multiple end-to-end learning tasks. This technique effectively detects colloids in an image while simultaneously producing a high-quality segmentation mask for each instance.
